ESCAPING EXODUS series by @nickydrayden It encourages readers to reflect upon the impact of oppression, the pleasures and pitfalls of tradition, and the beauty of love for the individual and for greater society. It centers around several protagonists learning to express their agency as citizens in a mostly-binary, queer, polyamorous, family and class focused, matriarchal society. It is a read that keeps on giving and causes you to continue to reflect afterward. It actually brings to mind #LilithsBrood aka #XenogenesisSeries by Ancestor Octavia E. Butler as the Oankali, like Drayden's Zenzee, both partner with the human species during their evolution. The interactions with these extraterrestrial species results in a powerful commentary on conservation, extinction, and exploration. Three Women: Seeking asylum. Seeking whirlwind love. Seeking a career boost. It's taken me a moment, yet I finally read IN EVERY MIRROR IT'S BLACK: A NOVEL by @lolaakinmade. It is a powerful novel following the lives of three Black Women as they journey to Sweden with the aid of or following the ask of a well-to-do Swedish man. It was interesting to follow the impact this move had on the women. The book navigated a narrow line between whether these women were there to add to the Swedish man's status or improve their lives. This book discusses *tokenism in a homogenous society *citizenship within a new nation *fetishism in dating *the presence of voice one has in a society where they are one of the few *sexual harassment and violence *the definition of racism, classism, and nationalism *mental well-being *varying abilities It is a text that speaks to what may occur following the situations we're placed in and the choices we make. Determining if and how we may remove ourselves, handle the pain, or pivot yet again. I feel there is even more to take away from the book and have pondered this single question: How do the similarities between this book and my life encourage greater understanding? For weeks, I've been thinking about reading THE OTHER BLACK GIRL by @zakiyadalilaharris (psychological thriller/suspense novel released in 2021). I finally read it and just finished it today! It touches on several very important topics: 1) The experience of being the only or one of the few Black Women in a workplace. 2) The experience of being bullied in the workplace. 3) The experience of showing up as yourself at work. I literally just finished this book and am shook by how things played out, and how realistic the experiences of the characters are. This is a brilliant read for Black Women in Toxic Workplaces and looking to leave them, and people who feel they need to check their "Black-suit" at the door before entering work. This book sparks conversation and discussion. Content warning: Bullying, Micro & Macro-aggressions, Violence Against Black Minds and Bodies I feel the need to scratch my head after reading this book (like I had a bad perm), and have some serious conversations about the way Black Women work with each other in office spaces.
